Food Waste Reduction Workshops - Learn New Skills, Save Time & Money

*The workshop portal will be online from 22 SEP – 30 NOV, giving you a window of up to 11 weeks to participate.

*Detailed workshop notes are available on the workshop portal page. These PDF downloads include more tips, resources, recipes, and links. There is also a ‘Q and A’ section to help you think back through what has been covered in the workshop. This makes a great starting point for further learning and discussion, especially when you join a Zoom session/s with the facilitators and other participants.

This allows us to send you access to the video workshop links straight away. You will not need to enter anything other than your name, your email, and your address to register. Kylie talks through different ways of meal planning for your household and demonstrates what that might look like. There are loads of different strategies and action points to explore that will help you to find what works for your household. She also talks about handy apps and online resources.
 
#2 Low Waste Shopping - Informed Choices.
Whether you love or hate shopping it's all about the choices we make.
Kylie takes us on a shopping journey! How can we make great decisions before and during the shopping process, from making a list to hitting the aisles. What can we think about in terms of the origin of the food we buy, the quantity, the packaging, how processed items might be, and more. All the info you need to be able to choose what works best for your family while avoiding food waste and landfills.
 
#3 Fridge Storage.
Produce storage hacks!
Madeleine gives great tips on preparing produce for improved shelf-life and suggests a ‘use-it-first’ box to help avoid food waste. She helps us to rediscover what our fridge can do at its best. Is there airflow? How do I check that the temperature is sitting at 5 degrees or below? What is specific about my fridge layout? How fresh produce can be stored to encourage a longer shelf life.
 
#4 Freezer & Pantry Storage - Shelf Life.
Storage strategies for best shelf life.
What is the food waste reduction hierarchy? Avoid - reduce - reuse - repurpose - recycle. Kylie includes great tips on how to use your pantry and freezer to get the best out of your food and minimise waste. There are loads of action points and examples that will inspire you to get stuck in and revisit how you might do things. Organising your storage helps you take stock of your options!
 
#5 Low Waste Cooking - Save Food!
Using every bit of your produce.
Madeleine invites us to discover ways we can use every part of our fresh produce. There are plenty of tips and tricks for substituting flavours along the way. Madeleine demonstrates a roast carrot, almond, and pesto salad and also shows us how to save our veggie scraps to make delicious stocks.
 
#6 Preserves & Pickles - Seasonal Savings.
Old school methods. Fridge-based.
Madeleine introduces different preservation techniques, with historical context. There are two fridge-based pickles to make and many suggestions for alternative flavour combinations to help you get excited about how you can use up your produce and spices. Pickles and chutney make perfect accompaniments to cheese platters, meats, wraps, slaws, toasted sandwiches, and more. It’s all about using up what you’ve got on hand.

Learn how to turn your food waste into an asset! You will be amazed at what options you have to recycle and ways you can re-invest your resource. Even if you only have a small space and no garden there are 3 ways you can compost your scraps: Bokashi composting, the share waste program, and FOGO bins. Look at scrap categories and develop a scrap management system that suits your household.
 
#9 Composting - Building Layers.
How to build a compost pile.
This engaging video from Kylie includes great tips on why are we trying to avoid food waste, how to manage scraps, gives strategies for using onion peels, citrus, eggshells & leftover oil, and demonstrates how to build your own compost pile, with layers and ingredients explained. At the end, there is a quick look at vermicomposting.
